HAMPDEN – Galen S. Swan Sr., 87, died peacefully July 3, 2013, at a local hospital surrounded by his family. A lifelong resident of Hampden, Galen was born April 29, 1926, in Hampden, son of Lewellyn and Helen (Patterson) Swan.
Galen served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his military service, he was appointed a rural letter carrier for the Hampden Highlands Post Office, Dec. 26, 1946. Galen also operated a family sawmill and lumbering business as well as Highlands Auto Sales used car dealership. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, Mystic Lodge No. 65 A.F. & A.M., Hampden, and a lifelong honorary member of the Anah Temple Shrine Academicians. He enjoyed solving crossword puzzles and most of all will be remembered for his love of food, particularly shrimp, pies, and above all, ice cream. Galen will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and friend.
Galen is survived by his four children, Donna MacDonald and husband, Michael, of Florida, Mary-Helen Michaud of Waterville, Cynthia Smith and husband, Steven, of Sanford and Galen “Chip” Swan Jr. and wife, Ann Hutchings, of Hampden; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Galen was predeceased by his parents; brother, Robert in 1926; sister, Charlene Martin in 1981; son-in-law, Danny R. P. Michaud in 2007; and wife, Eleanor (Robinson) Swan, in 1994.
Family and friends are invited to visit 6-8 p.m. Monday, July 8, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, with Pastor Peter Remick officiating. Interment with military honors will be held immediately after the funeral at Lakeview Cemetery, Hampden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Galen’s honor may be made to Shriners Hospitals for children-Boston, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114.
