MILBRIDGE – Lawrence A. Sellars, age 90, of Owls Head, passed away peacefully in Milbridge on the morning of Aug. 9, 2013. Lawrence was born Dec. 10, 1922 in Prentiss, son of Estella (Toby) and John Sellars. Larry spent his childhood in Prentiss, graduating from Eastern Maine Insitute in Springfield, class of 1939. He married his high school sweetheart and wife of 53 years, Muriel B. Moores, that same year. They had a daughter and two sons, Nancy, Lawrence and Ronald. He served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific during World War II. He loved to talk about being the heavyweight boxing champion during his tour of duty. After graduating from the University of Maine in Orono, he taught high school and coached basketball. He eventually left teaching to work in management at Sears and Roebuck while he raised his family. After his children were grown, he went back to the teaching he loved. He was known and appreciated by his students as a good math teacher and had a successful career coaching basketball, field and track.
Larry was an avid sportsman who loved hunting and fishing. He had many happy memories of time spent at his camp in Lakeville. Family was everything to him. He took pride in growing a vegetable garden to share with people he knew. He loved playing Cribbage and reminiscing about the happy times they shared. Despite living with Alzheimer’s disease for the past few years, Larry remained positive and courageous, never losing his sense of humor.
