STONINGTON – Annie Bernice Fifield, a lifetime resident of Hancock County, passed away at the age of 90, on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at the Island Nursing Home in Deer Isle.
Annie was born July 11, 1923, to John Arthur and Grace Eva (Dow) Douglass in Little Deer Isle. She grew up in Little Deer Isle, attending Saunders Church and graduating from McKinley High School. As a youth, Annie would often work as a domestic for the Eggemoggin Inn and private residences. On June 14, 1943, she married William Maurice Fifield in Wilmington, N.C., before his deployment overseas during World War II. After the war, Annie and William returned to Maine to settle and begin their family in Stonington. As an adult, she joined several other generations in the family business, Fifield Lobster Co. Annie enjoyed working with her family in the role as the company bookkeeper. Their first home was an old school house that William took apart, piece by piece, and moved from Deer Isle and reassembled at its present location on the family property. During their free time, Annie and William would travel to various functions and halls to enjoy socializing and dancing. Annie loved dancing – especially the jitter bug. She was also an active member of the Stonington United Methodist Church and enjoyed her many acquaintances from the Order of the Eastern Star. After retirement, Annie and William enjoyed their time as snowbirds in Key Largo, Fla., returning to Maine for the warm seasons. She especially looked forward to her traditional family gathering at Christmas when she could surround herself with her grandchildren and other family. Annie will also be remembered by her family for her positive attitude and love of people. She could always find the good in anyone.
Annie is survived by her sons, Wallace Fifield of Stonington and Royce Fifield and his wife, Karol, also of Stonington; sister, Mary Hagan of Quincy, Mass.; grandchildren, Kelley and Joey Tardif, Dustin and Jill Fifield, Misty Fifield, Rob Hutchinson, Travis Fifield, Christina Fifield and Richard Robinson, Cory Fifield, and Travis Lane; great-grandchildren, Tanner and Landon Fifield, Maddox and Tilton Hutchinson, Danica Robinson, and Mackenzie and Scott Lane; special nephews, Nevin and Joyce Hagan, Gary and Joanne Douglass, and Julian and Sonia Douglass; and many wonderful friends and neighbors.
