BANGOR – Margaret Frances “Peg” (Peterson) Redman, 94, left this world heading for another adventure in heaven with the angels on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, after a brief illness surrounded by her family. She was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Bangor, the daughter of Francis Everett and Margaret (Knaide) Peterson.
Peg was educated in the local parochial school system. A devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she served her country, family and places of employment including 20 years with the Sylvania Corp with the hope that her dedication might help to make this world a better place for others and it is felt by many that she actually accomplished this. Peg was one of the first woman from the Bangor/Brewer area to enlist in the armed forces during World War II. She joined the Women’s Army Auxillary Corps which was soon to be known as the Women’s Army Corps or “WACS”. She served in many capacities here at home and in the European Theatre where she married and survived the “London Blitz.” After the war, she returned to civilian life in the Midwest and ultimately back to Bangor to be with family. In September of 1989, she was instrumental in gathering together other women veterans in the area and was the driving force behind the formation of a women’s veterans group called “Women Are Veteran’s Too” she was still serving as a leader. She was a past senior vice commander and life member of the JF Kennedy Post No. 6, Disabled American Veterans. She was also a life member of the VFW Post No. 1761 of Bangor, the American Legion Post No. 84, Orono and a member of Women Veterans of America, Chapter 23. It goes without saying that she was an advocate for women veterans. Peg was an avid gardener around her home, a lover of flowers, plants and trees. Any family member who needed help or support she would be the first to offer a hand. She was the family rock and an inspiration to all. All who knew Peg loved her and she became a friend forever. Her children were her pride and her grandchildren were her joy.
Surviving are two children, Bonnie Ann (Redman) Hamm and her husband, Edward, and Ronald Paul Redman and his wife, Kay (Grant) Redman, all of Bangor; five grandchildren, Kimberly (Hamm) Colavito and her husband, Thomas, of Holden, Melinda Ann Hamm and her partner, Larry Jones, of Bar Harbor, Jonathon Edward Hamm and his wife, Jill Elizabeth (Eskow), of Bangor, Sadie Marie Frances Redman of Bangor and Phoebe Sweet and her husband, John Nelson, of Washington, D.C.; seven great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Anthony, Michael and Jennifer Colavito of Holden, Jacob Tyler King, Jasmine Margaret Hamm and Jackson Noah Hamm of Bangor; a special cousin, Caroline Hall Goggin of Houston.
Family and friends may visit 3-6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor.
