MILLINOCKET – Shirlie Martha Soucie, 78, entered her heavenly home on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013. She was born July 26, 1935, in Millinocket, the daughter of Lester and Lottie Soucie.
Shirlie graduated high school at the age of 16 and two years later she joined the U.S. Air Force. Her dream of playing the trumpet in the Women’s Official Air Force Band was finally realized. She traveled over 80,000 miles a year with the band. After leaving the service, Shirlie trained and worked as an X-ray technician. She went on to graduate from UMO in 1974 and taught in the Bangor school system for 14 years. Shirlie loved nature, and feeding the birds and animals that flocked to her doorstep filled her with great joy. She also wrote and illustrated her own poems.
Shirlie is survived by her nieces, Christy Gagnon and her husband, Rodney, of Mattawamkeag, and Janelle Gray and her husband, Scott, of Hampden; and other family members. She also leaves behind many friends in the community and at the First Congregational Church, especially Candy and Wayne Kidney and their family. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved sister, Barbara; and brother, Kenneth Bartlett.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at First Congregational Church, 274 Katahdin Ave., Millinocket, with the Rev. Terry Given, pastor, officiating. Committal services, with military honors, will be at Millinocket Cemetery. Gifts in memory of Shirlie may be sent to The Christmas Families Project at First Congregational Church, P.O.
