PRESQUE ISLE and MARS HILL – Charles David McKay, 90, passed away on Sept. 24, 2013, at the Mars Hill Health Center after a brief illness. David was born Jan. 14, 1923, to Charles and Helen (Orchard) McKay in Florenceville, NB, Canada.
As a young man he sought work in the United States, where he met his beloved wife Frances (Graves) McKay and remained for the rest of his life. They were married for 52 years, parted only by her death on Sept. 23, 2009.
David worked as a truck driver for Milliken Tomlinson and Wettereau, delivering furniture, groceries, and other items throughout the state of Maine and the Eastern US. He enjoyed woodworking and loved to share his work; visitors would often leave with a bowl, sconces, or a small table. David and Fran enjoyed years of camping and traveling, where they made many wonderful friends who filled their lives with happiness and their home with photos and mementos. After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed spending their winters in Florida and traveling to Indiana and throughout Canada to visit family.
He is survived by his sister, Barbara (McKay) Peterson and her husband, Watson Peterson; his brother-in-law, Estle Townsend Sr.; his nieces and nephews, Estle Townsend Jr., Gregory Townsend, Barbara (Townsend) Raudenbush, Becky (Townsend) Anderson, Brock Peterson, Tanda (Peterson) Perry, and Darryl Blackie, their spouses, children, and grandchildren.
He will also be missed by his family by marriage, sisters-in-law, Ann (Graves) Smith, Elizabeth (Graves) Merkel, Joyce (Graves) Stearns and her husband, Carl; and his brother-in-law, George “Bud” Graves and his wife, Norma; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors will feel his loss deeply.
In addition to his wife Frances, and infant son, Andrew David; he was predeceased by his sisters, Geraldine (McKay) Townsend and Leah (McKay) Blackie.
A private family viewing will be held 2-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Duncan Funeral Home, 8 Main St., Mars Hill, followed by a graveside service for family and friends at 3:30 p.m. at Kings Grove Cemetery, Mars Hill, with the Rev.
