MOUNT DESERT – Howard “Bud” Merchant Jr., 91, died Sept. 26, 2013, at an MDI health care facility. He was born May 26, 1922, in Hall Quarry, the son of Howard and Melissa (Alley) Merchant Sr.
Bud graduated from Gilman High School in Northeast Harbor. He worked at Underwood Canning Factory and as an assistant superintendant and later worked for many years at the Northeast Harbor Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda (Pomroy) Merchant; son, John Merchant and his wife, Jeannie, of Mount Desert; daughter, Hazel and her husband, Melvin Young, of Milbridge; six grandchildren; a special granddaughter, Barbara M. Pettegrow and husband, Corey, Mike Merchant and wife, Valerie, Hayley Merchant and Carl Butler Jr., all of Southwest Harbor, Justin Merchant of Austin, and Christopher Butler and wife, Christina, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, Chad Grass, Abbe Pettegrow, Natalie Butler, Brianna Butler, and Ava Trombley. He was predeceased by five brothers.
