DEXTER – Mattie I. (Richards) Higgins Woodbury, 80, died Nov. 1, 2013, at her home in Dexter. She was born Oct. 27, 1933, in Levant, the daughter of Lester and Inez (Read) Richards.
She worked at Dexter Shoe Company and at the Charlotte White Center for many years, and volunteered at the Shaw House in Bangor. She was also part owner of Bar L Ranch from 1978 to 1984. She loved to go “yard saling” and work in her flower gardens. She was foster mother of around 87 children. She loved going to the ocean and loved being with the ones she loved. Mattie enjoyed marching in parades as “Hannah the Hobo.” She was a member of Rebecca Lodge No. 111 in Corinna. Mattie had seven children with the late Clifford E. Higgins.
She is survived by four daughters, Jean Nichols and husband, Frank, of Hartland, Barbara Criss-Leighton and husband, Sherman, of Dexter, Wendy Bechard and partner, Brian Stevens, of New York, and Cheri Curtis and husband, Dale, of St. Albans; stepchildren, Mary Craig of Sangerville, Janet Nuite of Sangerville, Kim Lassen of Ripley, Jeanne Webb of Florida, Kevin Woodbury of Parkman, Matthew Woodbury of Sangerville, Tim Tunks of Stetson, and Scott Henderson; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Buzz and Maggie Soucie, and Christina Tahony. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph M. Woodbury; daughters, Carol Littlefield, and Winonia “Muffy” Higgins; son, Clifford Higgins; three grandsons, Charles, David, and Donald Littlefield; granddaughter, Nina Criss; two sisters; and four brothers.
Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Crosby & Neal, 68 Exeter Road, Corinna, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday. Burial will be at Morses Corner Cemetery, Corinna.
