HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – Janet “Jan” Goss Conti, passed on Nov. 8, 2013, at her home, Four Season’s Elizabeth House. Born in Washington, D.C., on April 13, 1929, Janet was the daughter of the late Elmer and Sheila Goss.
Jan was a graduate of Westbrook Junior College, Portland, now the University of New England Portland Campus, earning a degree in business and medical laboratory studies. In the early 1950s she worked as a doctor’s assistant in Washington, D.C., and in the tissue laboratory at a medical center located in Bangor.
Jan is survived by her husband of 59 years, John Conti of Hendersonville, N.C.; her son, Robert of Long Beach, Calif.; a special son, William Proctor; six cousins; and special friends, Sister Mary Norberta, Marcelle Coffin, Connie Kelsey, and Joyce Neill.
While living in Maine for more than 40 years, Jan was active in numerous civic and philanthropic organizations. She served as President and in other official capacities for the local Y.M.C.A. and was also President of the Sunshine Club for Children, supporting Shriner’s Children’s hospitals. Jan was active in the Jaycee wives’ organization, the Junior League of Bangor, and the board of St. Joseph’s Hospital, utilizing some of her beloved Siberian Huskies in the program. Jan led the fundraising drive for the first digital breast care center at St. Joseph’s Hospital and also helped establish a safe house for abused women and children. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Jan was co-owner of a needle point store in Bangor, creating designs for clients all over the world. She has remained a non-resident member of The Ouipus Club located in Bangor.
After Jan and John moved to Hendersonville, N.C., in 1999, she became active in the Shriner’s Ladies Auxiliary and was honored to serve a term as its President. She and John enjoyed traveling during their married life, visiting Italy, England, Alaska, the Caribbean, Newfoundland and Scotland, which they visited multiple times. They also traveled extensively in the United States. Jan is in Christian Fellowship with Grace Covenant Tabernacle in Hendersonville, N.C.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at Thos. Shepherd’s Church Street Chapel, Hendersonville, N.C. A memorial service will be held in Bangor at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Four Seasons Compassion for Life, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731. The family wishes to acknowledge the devoted care provided to Jan by her caregivers from Mountain Home Care and from Four seasons Compassion for Life. Thos.
