LAKE CITY, Fla. – Nellie “Nell” Elizabeth Dyer Moores, 89, peacefully passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 13, 2013, at the Haven Hospice Care Center in Lake City, Fla. Born March 25, 1924, in Harborside, she was the third of nine children born to D. Elwin and Evelyn Dyer.
Nell married her college sweetheart, Lawrence “Larry” Wayne Moores Jr. on Nov. 27, 1945. Nell and Larry raised two children, Linda Ann Moores Williams and Lawrence “Larry” Wayne Moores, III. Nell received her teaching certificate from Washington State Normal School in Machias and began her 26 year teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Lambert Lake. Later she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education at the University of Maine and continued her teaching career in Old Town, Bar Harbor, Northport, N.Y., and Bethpage, N.Y. Upon retirement, Nell and Larry moved from Long Island, N.Y., to the Bradenton, Fla., area. Six years later, they resettled to Live Oak on a 50 acre farm, which they converted to a pecan farm. Ten years later, Nell and Larry sold the farm and became residents of the Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park, Fla. Throughout her life, Nell maintained an active lifestyle through volunteerism and membership in various community organizations. After retiring, she remained committed to education through art education and tutoring children in local schools. She maintained membership in the Live Oak Women’s Club, Live Oak Artist Guild, Colored Pencil Society of America (Charter Member), Suwannee Valley Quilters, Live Oak First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Major Bagaduce Chapter (Maine) of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Neighbors, friends, and family appreciated Nell’s numerous artistic talents, readiness to help others, and her boundless energy and zest for life. As an artist, she received recognition and awards as a painter, colored pencil artist, seamstress, quilter, and handcraft artist. We all fondly remember Nell as a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend.
Nell is survived by her 91 year old sister, Dorothy “Dot” Bakeman, who was her lifelong best friend; younger brothers, Victor Dyer and Elmer Dyer; younger sister, Dr. Alice Dyer; children, Linda Williams and Lawrence “Larry” Moores III; and three granddaughters, Dr. Amy Long, Kristen “Kris” Moores, and Melanie Moores.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Village Church, Bixler Chapel, at the Advent Christian Village, Dowling Park, Fla. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org, (800) 227-2345, or 2119 SW 16th Street, Gainesville, FL 32608.
