BANGOR, Maine — Thanks to a donation, city police canines will have extra protection while on patrol with their handlers.
Bangor police announced Thursday that the department recently received ballistic safety vests for both of the force’s canines, according to Sgt. Cathy Rumsey.
She said the vests were donated by the Vested Interest in Canines, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit organization.
The vests will protect the canines from stab or gunshot wounds.
Receiving the vests are Lex and Havoc. Lex has been partnered with Officer Jason Linkletter for a year and a half, and Havoc has worked with Officer Kim Donnell for the last year.
Both dogs, German Shepherds, are certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in tracking, articles searches, building searches and officer protection. Lex is drug-detection certified, while Havoc is working toward that goal.
