MILLINOCKET – “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith”

Gene completed his earthly race on Wednesday, January 1, 2014. He started his life journey on July 24, 1937 in the town of Hamlin, Maine, born as the eldest child of Ludger and Clara (Berube) Martin.
As a teenager he moved to Millinocket where he met the girl who would become his wife, Cynthia Legassey, and they married on September 13, 1958. Gene worked for Great Northern Paper Company for 19 ½ years and for Prudential Insurance for 10 years before having to retire for medical reasons. He enjoyed his family, fishing at Henderson Pond, and was an active participant of Donald V. Henry Post #80 of the American Legion in Millinocket until his declining health no longer allowed it.
Gene is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cynthia; a daughter, Debbie and her husband David; three sons, Robert and his wife Debbie, Gene and his wife Ruth, and Micahel and his wife Tonya. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, a sister, Bernette Levesque, and a brother Melvin Martin and his wife Anne; five nieces, and seven nephews. In addition to his parents, Gene was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Marie Martin, Marlene Guy, a granddaughter, Jamie Lea Linscott, and a brother in law, Ray Levesque.
Graveside services with military honors will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Millinocket Cemetery, with Francis Megno officiating. Gifts in memory of Gene may be sent to the Katahdin Area Support Group, P.O. Box 374, Millinocket, ME 04462, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, 163 Lancaster St., Suite 160B, Portland, ME 04101.
