HAMPDEN – George Henry Miller Jr., 71, of Hampden, died Jan. 31, 2014, in the arms of his loving family. George was born June 19, 1942, on the Miller farm, to Hildred (Simpson) and George Miller.
George graduated from Hampden Academy where he played football. He served four years in the United States Air Force. George worked for 33 years in the Bucksport mill, starting with St. Regis.
A simple man, a farmer all his life, George raised purebred Charolais beef cattle from 1964 until his death. A friend of Bill W. for 25 years, he would say, “What is, is.” George fought a battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) for more than nine years with grace and dignity and good humor. He never quit; he never gave up.
George was predeceased by his mother and father and by his brother-in-law, Albert Hall. With enormous respect and love, he is survived by his wife, Janice Von Brook; his stepdaughter, Carol Lamb; his stepson, James Lamb and wife, June, and their children, Courtney and James; his sister, Marilyn Hall and her daughters, Deborah Wisse and husband Wes, Rebecca Bedard and husband, Dean, and Betsey Crumrine and husband Mark; and by his devoted friends and barn crew, Stephen, Martha, Becky, Emily and Sarah Treadwell. He is also survived by his son, George H. Miller III and daughter, Marie; his son, Gregory Miller and his children, Geoffrey and Jessica; and his daughter, Judi Miller and son, Alex.
A service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at Hampden Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with visiting starting at 10 a.m. There will be an open house at the farm following the service.
