University of Maine senior Jimmy Reed scored 15 points Monday during the second day of competition at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championships at Albany, N.Y.
Reed took home an individual title in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.01 seconds and he finished fourth in the 60-meter dash (6.98) to spark coach Mark Lech’s Black Bears to a third-place finish in the two-day event.
UMaine scored 116.4 points behind champion Albany (219) and runner-up Binghamton (139.2). It was the Bears’ best finish since 2001.
The UMaine women wound up seventh among nine teams, scoring 38 points. Albany took the team crown with 198.5 points, followed by Binghamton (125.83).
Senior Justin Gagne of Biddeford won the shot put on Monday with a throw of 53 feet even after claiming second in Sunday’s weight throw at 60-10½.
Tristan Wortman also had an outstanding meet as he won the heptathlon with 4,952 points. The sophomore from Holden took second in the 1,000 meters and was third in the 60 meters, the 60 hurdles and the pole vault.
Teammate Matthew York was fifth in the heptathlon.
Nathaniel Meade, a senior from Waldoboro, claimed top honors in the triple jump with a leap of 48-10. Sophomore Julian Hubbard of Augusta tied for second at 47-3.
Jake Leithiser of Old Town was the runner-up in the 500 meters, finishing 0.07 seconds behind Binghamton’s Zach Keefer in 1 minute, 3.45 seconds.
The Bears’ 4×400 relay squad of Daniel Roukey, Joe Viola, Reed and Leithiser finished second in 3:16.90.
Brian Woodbury of Scarborough was fifth in the shot put.
On Sunday, senior Wilson Adams established a Black Bear record in the weight throw when he launched it 64 feet, 6½ inches. The effort eclipsed his own UMaine mark by more than two feet and places him in the top 50 Division I performers this winter.
Senior Kelton Cullenberg of Chesterville turned in a second-place finish in the 5,000 meters. His time of 14:50.40 was less than 2½ seconds behind winner Ben Snodgrass of Binghamton.
In the women’s meet, Robyn McFetters was victorious in the weight throw on Sunday. The junior’s heave of 53-9¼ was a season best.
Sophomore Emily Boardman claimed fourth in the same event at 50-7¼.
Sophomore Jaclyn Masters of Auburn was third in the pole vault (11-3¾) while
senior Jessica McCarthy and freshman Grace MacLean of Bangor captured third and fifth, respectively, in the pentathlon.
McCarthy finished second in the 800 meters (2:26.28) while MacLean was the runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles (9.01) and the high jump (5-5¾).
Jackson sets records
Teal Jackson of West Virginia Wesleyan University recently set two school records during the SPIRE Institute’s D-II Challenge.
The freshman sprinter from Brewer established school marks in the 60 meters (7.84 seconds) and the 200 (25.49). Those times rank 59th and 62nd, respectively, in this winter’s Division II national rankings.
