UMaine concert band
WINTERPORT — The University of Maine Concert Band will perform twice at the Wagner Middle School on Thursday, March 20. The band will play during an afternoon assembly and again at 7 p.m. in a free public concert.
Two musicians were students at the school some years ago. Aaron Beaulieu, a first-year mechanical engineering student, began playing the trumpet in the fifth grade. Jay Baines, a civil engineering major also in his first year at UMaine, began playing percussion at the same time. Both students have returned to the direction of their first teacher, Dana Ross, who conducts the UMaine concert band and is band and chorus director at Wagner Middle School.
“It’s safe to say the without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today in my music,” Baines said.

The Maine Home Garden News, released monthly from March through October, is designed to equip beginning and experienced home gardeners with research-based information. Each issue includes:
• A reminder list of timely actions in the garden and yard;
• Articles on fruits, vegetables, flowers, lawn care, trees, and shrubs;
• Videos;
• Other informative resources.
New in 2014 will be articles focusing on food and nutrition specific to a gardener’s perspective.
“Growing food and taking care of the yard can be rewarding and satisfying,” says UMaine Extension Educator and newsletter editor Richard Brzozowski. “Gardening is a great way to be outside, exercise, and have fun.
“Home gardeners in Maine are always seeking ways to improve their garden and its production. Improvements might involve extending the season, managing pests effectively, or trying something new and different,” he said.
