SOLON, Maine — A Starks man was taken to a local hospital Monday afternoon after the snowmobile he was operating was struck by a vehicle, police said.

Peter Rines, 43, was heading west on a trail crossing Route 201 when he was struck by a Chevrolet HHR operated by Nancy Whittemore, 59, of Solon, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred shortly after noon, Lancaster said.

Whittemore and her 72-year old passenger were not injured while Rines was taken by ambulance to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan for injuries not considered life-threatening, Lancaster said. Both Whittemore and her passenger were wearing seat belts.

Rines’ snowmobile was totaled and the Chevrolet sustained significant damage, Lancaster said. Police believe the snowmobile had a mechanical issue.
