ROCKLAND, Maine — The Coast Guard on Thursday suspended a search that started Wednesday evening after a caller reported seeking a flare in the sky off the coast in Knox County.

The all-night search, which involved ships and helicopters, stretched into the morning but found no evidence of anyone in distress, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Justin Uyttewall of the Rockland Coast Guard station said Thursday morning.

The flare was spotted in the vicinity of Ash Island off Owls Head shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday and reported by phone to the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard ship searched the waters off Owls Head, South Thomaston and St. George, an area known as the Mussel Ridge Channel.

The ship was assisted later in the evening by two helicopters from the Coast Guard Cape Cod Station in Massachusetts.

The search was suspended during the day Thursday when no evidence was found of anyone in distress nor the source of the possible flare.
