PORTLAND, Maine – A 24-year-old Cornish woman was arrested Sunday afternoon on the Maine Turnpike after police allegedly clocked her driving 123 mph with her children in the car.
Cheryl Gilson was charged with criminal speeding, driving to endanger and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Trooper Roger Teachout stopped a car driven by Gilson in Saco after she allegedly sped by him at 123 mph, McCausland said.
The two children, ages 3 and 5, were in the backseat, and three young men were also passengers.
There was no chase with the car, but because of the high speed, it took the trooper about 10 minutes to get close enough to get it stopped,” McCausland wrote in a release. “Gilson had no explanation for her actions, and the trooper said the three men also were unclear on where they were headed.”
Gilson was taken to Cumberland County Jail and released Sunday on $250 cash bail, according to a jail spokeswoman. McCausland could not say what happened to the children after the woman was arrested.
A court date was not immediately available.
