PORTLAND, Maine — A former Portland police officer has been indicted by the Cumberland County grand jury in connection with the theft of more than $158,000 from a family member.
Bruce Chase, 52, of Naples was charged with three counts of Class B theft, one count of Class C theft and one count of Class D misuse of entrusted property, the city of Portland said in a news release.
The crimes allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2014, the city said. The victim is a
family member, and Chase was managing her funds through a power of attorney.
Chase turned himself into the Cumberland County Jail on Friday, and he was released after posting $1,000. He is scheduled to appear in court June 11.
According to the city, Chase served as a Portland Public Safety officer from 1980 to 1982, when he became a Portland police officer. He retired as a sergeant in 2000. None of the alleged conduct occurred while Chase was employed by the Portland Police Department.
