MACHIASPORT, Maine — State police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Downeast Correctional Facility, the director of the minimum security facility said Saturday.
The inmate, Phillip Kay, 32, died about 3:15 p.m. Friday, Department of Corrections officials announced later that day.
Scott Jones, director of the prison, said Saturday that Kay’s death is being investigated by state police.
A Corrections spokesman announced earlier the death was under review by state police and the medical examiner.
Kay had served approximately four years and seven months of a 12-year split sentence for elevated aggravated assault.
The Downeast Correctional Facility is a minimum security prison that houses about 150 inmates who have little time left to serve on their sentences.
It is located on the site of a former Air Force station on the outskirts of Bucks Harbor, a fishing village in the town of Machiasport.
