Supper and a film

BANGOR — The public is invited to a vegetarian potluck supper and screening of the film, “Sacred Run,” at 5 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Peace and Justice Center of Eastern Maine  96 Harlow St., Suite 100. The film, which documents a run in which Indian leader, Dennis Banks, with First Nation people from North America and Japan, were joined by volunteers from 13 countries on a ceremonial run, finishing in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, will be shown at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to all, and will be followed by a discussion.

President and CEO

BANGOR — The board of directors of Penquis announced that Kara Hay has been named its next president and chief executive officer. Beginning June 18, Hay will lead Penquis as it continues the mission to assist individuals and families in preventing, reducing or eliminating poverty in their lives.

A Maine native, Hay holds a bachelor of arts degree in theater from the University of Maine, a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo and a aaster of arts degree in marriage and family therapy from Argosy University, Hawaii. She has served as a deputy director and operations manager for the Penquis Child Development Department since 2009.

Park clean up

BANGOR — In what has become an annual tradition to celebrate National Hospital Week and kick off summer, EMMC employees will clean up and beautify Bangor’s Chapin Park on Friday, May 16. Rain date is Friday, May 23.

Employees will pick up trash, spread mulch and plant flowers at the park, which is heavily used throughout the summer and is the location for the annual Chapin Park Block Party, a tradition since 1994.

National Hospital Week, which was first recognized in 1921 in Chicago, is celebrated the week of May 11. This year, the celebration is focused on the compassion, innovation and dedication at the center of hospital service.

Golf tournament

BREWER — A four-person scramble golf tournament will be held 7:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, June 21, at Pine Hill Golf Course in Brewer. Proceeds benefiting the Semper Fi Fund, a nonprofit organization which provides financial assistance and lifetime support to critically injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

The cost to enter the tournament is $40 per person, or $50 per person sharing a cart. Lunch is included.

Celtic spirituality

BLUE HILL — The Spiritual Life and Learning Center at St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church and the Reversing Falls Sanctuary will partner to offer a program focused on Celtic spirituality starting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 21. Discussions will take place 10:30-11:45 a.m. Wednesdays at St. Francis by the Sea in Blue Hill, and will run for six weeks, ending June 25. Co-facilitators will be the Rev. Claudia Smith and the Rev. Gary Vencill.

The six-week session will focus on reading and discussing “A New Harmony: The Spirit, the Earth and the Human Soul” by internationally known Celtic theologian and author the Rev. Dr. John Philip Newell. Newell will be the featured speaker at the 2014 Downeast Spiritual Life Conference in Castine July 11-12.

After  each meeting, a service will be conducted at noon at the church using a Celtic-inspired liturgy developed by John Philip Newell.

Cemetery association

FRANKFORT — The Pilgrims Home Cemetery Association in Monroe is holding its annual meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Frankfort Congregational Church vestry, Main Road. Those who have family buried in Pilgrims Home Cemetery are invited to attend the meeting.

Field trip

ORONO — Penobscot County Genealogical Society members and the public are invited to take a Field Trip to Fogler, a tour of the Special Collections department at University of Maine’s Fogler Library, 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at the Special Collections Room, Fogler Library, University of Maine. Parking passes must be obtained at the campus Public Safety Office at 81 Rangeley Road.

Soldier school

PROSPECT — Co. B of the 20th Maine Civil War re-enactor group will hold its annual School of the Soldier at 8:30 a.m.-5p.m. Saturday, May 17, and 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Fort Knox.

The public is invited to participate in Civil War marching, drilling and firing, and civilian activities.
