Queen City Ultimate is returning for its third season in the Greater Bangor area with the Bangor Ultimate Frisbee Summer League, building on the success of the past two years.

“Ultimate continues to be the fastest growing sport in the U.S., and the mission of Queen City Ultimate is to provide the opportunity to grow Ultimate in the local community through providing this summer league,” said Josh Kearns, organizer for the Bangor league.

The sport continues to grow in Maine, with the recent affiliation status of Maine Ultimate and the governing body of USA Ultimate, according to Kearns. Maine Ultimate recently put on Northeast Regional Championships for 28 high schools from Maine through Pennsylvania in Portland earlier this month.

“With the success of Maine Ultimate, Queen City Ultimate has teamed up with them to help promote the sport and league throughout the Maine community,” Kearns said.

The Bangor Summer League has pickup games before the league officially starts June 5. Games will be held at the Union Street Athletic Complex every Thursday through July 31, when the championship game will be played.

Each team is guaranteed nine games of Ultimate, and the games will start at 6:15 p.m. Anyone 16 years old and older can register to play, and no previous experience is required. The selected captains have been playing for several years and will help their teams learn the basics of Ultimate, as well as more offensive and defensive sets commonly found throughout the sport.

Teams will be formed through a player draft taking place at the beginning of June, and lists will be posted before the night of games. The teams will be co-ed. Games are seven-on-seven, with lineups comprising of either six males and one female, or five males and two females, with the offensive team dictating that lineup.

Games are played first to 15, with a halftime when one team reaches 8 points.

“Adding an extra level of building the Spirit of the Game that USA Ultimate promotes, there will also be social gatherings after games each week,” Kearns said. “Our league sponsor, Buffalo Wild Wings, is graciously opening up their doors, and we are proud to have a fun, family friendly sports-themed restaurant as a partner for this year’s league.”

Registration through May 29 is $50 per person, and everyone will receive a T-shirt and disc with this year’s logo, along with covering the costs of the fields and insurance. The Bangor Summer League is a USA Ultimate Sanctioned Event, which covers full insurance for all players.
