DEXTER, Maine — A dog was found dead off Post Road on Thursday morning and a local man was arrested in connection with the canine’s death, police said.

Anthony Bari, 52, is being held at the Penobscot County Jail on a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class C felony, Dexter Police Chief Kevin Wintle said.

Wintle said police received a complaint of possible animal cruelty shortly before 11:30 a.m., and when he and Lt. Alan Grinnel responded, the deceased dog was located.

Wintle did not disclose the dog’s breed or whom it belonged to, citing an open investigation.

Bari, who had been staying at a Post Road residence, was arrested without incident and brought to the police station, then to Penobscot County Jail.

Bari’s first court appearance is scheduled for July 17. The case remains under investigation.
