SOUTH PORTLAND — A free, family-friendly day of 19th century baseball will be held 11 a.m.-4 p.m., June 21, at Southern Maine Community College, 2 Fort Road, South Portland. Tripleheader with Maine’s Dirigo and Presumpscot Baseball Clubs, and the Essex baseball Organization from Newbury, Massachusetts, along with a kids clinic which is open to any young person. Kids will learn the 19th-century rules, play catch, and run the bases. Game 1 is at 11 a.m., Game 2, 12:45 p.m.; Game 3, 2:30 p.m.; kids clinic 1 p.m. Start times approximate. Free grilled food prepared by the SMCC Athletic Department, and vintage baseball paraphernalia on display.
CANOE RACING
SEBEC VILLAGE — Three Rivers Kiwanis Sebec River Canoe and Kayak Race, with nine racing and recreational classes for canoes and kayaks, is set for June 14. The race is held under the auspices of the American Canoe Association and the Maine Canoe and Kayak Racing Organization. More information is available at www.mackro.org. A race T-shirt and canoe decal comes with the $20 per person adult registration fee and the $15 per youth registration fee. Race participants under the age of 18 must be registered by an adult. BRUNSWICK — The Howard Vandersea/Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation will offer a Maine Youth Football Coaches Clinic to be held at five sites around the state on Thursday, June 12. Free for all participants, the clinics will include instruction by the collegiate coaching staffs in the state. The primary focus will be on the growth and development of youth and freshman-level football coaches. The five sites, and coordinating hosts, are: Orono (University of Maine), Waterville (Colby College), Lewiston (Bates College), Portland (Bowdoin College) and Saco (Thornton Academy). PRESQUE ISLE — The Aroostook House of Comfort will host its 2nd Annual charity Golf Classic on Saturday, June 14, at the Presque Isle Country Club. Proceeds will go toward the construction of the only palliative and hospice care home north of Auburn. The four-person scramble kicks off with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Registration and check-in begin at 7:30 a.m. An awards and recognition ceremony will be held at the club’s restaurant at the 19th hole immediately following the tournament. Formerly the Logan P. Graves Golf Tournament, this year’s Golf Classic challenge is partially underwritten by platinum sponsor, Whited-Peterbilt. The four-person scramble costs $75 per person and includes light breakfast, coffee, soda, hot dogs on the course, a Titleist golf ball, and a Golf Classic golf shirt. Cash prizes will be awarded to men and women for first place, $440; second place, $360; third place, $280; plus cash awards for team gross, team net, longest drive in fairway, and closest to the pin. ELLSWORTH — The Chris Angell Junior Summer Tennis Championships will be held June 14-15, at the Ellsworth Tennis Center. This U.S. Tennis Association-sanctioned tournament features top boys and girls in the 16 and 18 age groups. Named for Chris Angell, Maine’s top ranked open player who struggled with mental illness, the tournament is a fundraiser for NAMI, Maine. All entrants will get a T-shirt, winner and runner-up trophies, and free dinner to all participants will be held Saturday afternoon.
