EDDINGTON, Maine — A single-story home on Riverside Drive was destroyed by fire on Thursday night, according to officials.

Firefighters from five communities were dispatched to the scene shortly before 9 p.m., according to Eddington fire Lt. Craig Russell.

Russell said the fire was so significant that firefighters could see smoke “from quite a ways away.”

“The roof was gone already” when firefighters arrived, Russell said.

The home’s driveway is roughly a quarter-mile long, so crews had to use a tanker truck to haul water because the nearest hydrant was several miles down the road, according to Russell.

Nobody was hurt in the blaze and the man who owns the home was not home at the time, Russell said.

The damage was so severe that firefighters weren’t able to determine where it started, but the state fire marshal’s office was expected to arrive in town Friday to investigate, Russell said. “There’s too much damage for us to be able to determine anything.”

The lieutenant said the blaze does not appear to be suspicious.

Firefighters from Eddington, Brewer, Holden, Bradley and Milford responded while Dedham and Orrington crews were on standby, Russell said.
