CANAAN, Maine — Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident involving a sport utility vehicle and a female jogger that occurred early Memorial Day.

The woman, whose name was not released, was jogging on Hill Road around 5:15 a.m. when the accident occurred, Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said.

The jogger was wearing a fluorescent yellow vest when she was hit by what she described as a white sport utility vehicle, according to Lancaster. She had just left her home at the time of the accident.

Weather is being ruled out as a factor in the accident, Lancaster said.

“The weather conditions were slightly drizzly and foggy but visibility was good,” the chief deputy said.

The woman heard the SUV approach her from behind and as it passed her, the vehicle’s outside passenger mirror struck her in the arm, Lancaster said.

The mirror was shattered and torn from the vehicle and was left at the scene, and the vehicle fled, according to Lancaster.

The jogger was treated at the scene but was not transported to the hospital, Lancaster said. The accident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information on the accident should call the sheriff’s office at 474-9591 and ask for Deputy Wilfred Dodge.
