Hannaford Supermarkets will take ownership of Graves Shop ‘n Save, an independent grocer in Presque Isle that has long been supplied by Hannaford.
The New England supermarket giant announced the acquisition Monday and said the store will begin operating under the Hannaford banner this fall.
Graves Shop ‘n Save has been a core retailer in Presque Isle since 1959, when the Graves family expanded its grocery store in Mars Hill — a town 15 miles south of Presque Isle — to Aroostook County’s largest city. The business has operated out of its current location on Main Street since 1970.
The family sold the supermarket to store manager Brandon Hopkins in 2022.
“When I took ownership of the store, we were committed to maintaining the strong foundation that had been built by the Graves family and ensuring it continued to serve the community well,” Hopkins said in a release. “I’m pleased to have found a partner in Hannaford that shares that commitment. We’re confident that Hannaford will continue to build on the store’s legacy for years to come.”
Hannaford’s acquisition of the grocery store will raise its total number of locations to 189, including 69 in Maine. The company, headquartered in Scarborough, has expanded its reach in northern Maine in recent years. It acquired Paradis Shop ‘n Save stores in Fort Kent and Madawaska in 2024, and also runs supermarkets in Caribou and Houlton.
“This store has earned the trust of generations of customers and we’re honored to carry that legacy forward,” said Todd Bullen, Hannaford vice president of retail operations. “Our focus is on preserving what customers value most while continuing to deliver fresh, quality products, dependable value and exceptional service in a welcoming environment.”
Once the change of ownership is complete, the store will support the My Hannaford Rewards program, the chain said.
Graves Shop ‘n Save currently operates a loyalty rewards stamp program, where stamps earned from purchases can be exchanged for in-store gift certificates.
