Bangor is set to hire a new fire chief, promoting the interim chief to fill the position permanently.
The City Council on Monday night is set to approve Eric Pelletier as the new Bangor fire chief with a four-year contract, according to the council’s meeting agenda.
Pelletier assumed the role as interim fire chief on June 5. The city’s internal hire replaces the previous chief, Geoffrey Low, who abruptly resigned a year and a half into a three-year contract.
Pelletier joined the Bangor Fire Department in 2015 as a lieutenant, working his way up to deputy chief, a position he held for eight years. Before joining Bangor, Pelletier worked at the Hermon Fire Department.
City Manager Carollynn Lear and a lawyer for the city, Grace Innis, have signed a recommendation that the council make the hire.
He will have a base salary of $149,801, according to his contract.
Pelletier did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“[Pelletier] brings a deep level of knowledge and commitment to the field of firefighting, tremendous leadership skills developed as Bangor’s deputy fire chief, and deep experience leading a large and complex department, like the Bangor Fire Department,” Lear said. “The city and its residents are extremely fortunate that [Pelletier] has agreed to step up into this new role.”
The hiring comes after the city said it wasn’t conducting a formal search but was “considering next steps,” spokesperson David Warren said previously. Lear previously told the BDN the city was starting with an internal search.
Low was hired in December 2024, after a “comprehensive search” by the city. He replaced Thomas Higgins, who retired in September 2024, after 34 years in the department.
