The Bangor fire chief resigned Thursday in the middle of a three-year contract.

Geoffrey Low submitted his resignation to the city Thursday and his last day is Friday, he told the Bangor Daily News on Friday.

Low stepped into the position in January 2025. He had a three-year contract and a starting salary of $124,405.

Bangor was Low’s third stint as a fire chief. He spent 24 years at the Auburn Fire Department, serving as chief from 2016 to 2018. He then became Orono’s fire chief in 2018 and then the town’s public safety director from 2021 until 2024. Low became the deputy chief at Ellsworth in June 2024, before accepting the Bangor job.

A Bangor city spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“We’ve done a lot of good work during that time and the challenges that remain really are adaptive challenges that it’s probably best for the long-term stakeholders to take on,” Low said. “I’m stepping aside and I’m going to let them go ahead and manage those things.”

When asked to clarify what he means by “adaptive challenges,” he would only say they were “organizational challenges” that would be better for someone other than Low to manage.

Low said he was thankful to be part of the team, which has done great things.

In a Facebook post from Low on Thursday night that was shared with the BDN, he said he was announcing his departure to “get ahead” of rumors.
