Colby’s Suechting an All-American

WATERVILLE, Maine —- Colby College’s Sophie Suechting (Denver, Colo.) earned All-America honors as a sophomore after being named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Second Team on Thursday.

Suechting sat in the third spot in the boat for Colby head coach Stew Stokes.

The Mules finished the season 12th at the ECAC National Invitational Regatta after placing 18th in 2013.

Gabriella Bilotta and Heather Monty of Bates College in Lewiston were selected for the All-America first team.

Bernard named academic All-American

GORHAM, Maine — University of Southern Maine senior Chris Bernard of Scarborough is among the NCAA Division III baseball student-athletes named Wednesday to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Baseball second team as selected by the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bernard, an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) third-team All-American as a utility player, was named to the All-Little East Conference and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England first team as the designated hitter, and the D3baseball.com All-Region third team.

In 2014, Bernard batted .320 with a team-high 20 doubles, two triples, four home runs and 48 RBI.

Ballmer to buy Clippers for $2 billion

LOS ANGELES — Former Microsoft Corp chief executive Steve Ballmer has won the bidding for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers franchise with a $2 billion offer, the Los Angeles Times newspaper reported on Thursday.

Ballmer outbid two groups, one led by media mogul David Geffen that offered $1.6 billion and another from Los Angeles investors who bid $1.2 billion, the Times reported without identifying its source.

Manhattan’s Masiello completes degree

Manhattan men’s basketball coach Steve Masiello, who has been on unpaid leave by the school since April, has completed the requirements for his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky

A spokesman for Kentucky told ESPN.com that Masiello completed his course work and will be awarded a degree in August.

It was discovered that Masiello had not earned his degree from Kentucky. Masiello had accepted the South Florida job, but a background check turned up that he hadn’t finished the requirements to earn his degree, and the offer was withdrawn..

Manhattan said it would reinstate Masiello once he completed his degree.

Masiello led the Jaspers to a 25-8 record, the NCAA tournament and a near-upset over Louisville this past season. He has a 60-39 mark in three seasons as coach.

NBA plans games in Mexico, UK

Mexico and the United Kingdom will host regular-season NBA games as part of its expanded Global Games schedule for the 2014-15 season.

The Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves — who played the San Antonio Spurs in Mexico last season — will play at the Mexico City Arena on Nov. 12, as part of NBA Global Games Mexico City 2014. NBA Global Games London 2015 pits the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks at The O2 on Jan. 15.

Stephenson, Hibbert fined for flopping

Guard Lance Stephenson and center Roy Hibbert of the Indiana Pacers were fined in separate incidents for violating the NBA’s anti-flopping rules during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, the league announced Thursday.

Stephenson was fined $10,000 for his second violation of the playoffs which occurred with 8:23 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Pacers’ 93-90 win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Hibbert was fined $5,000 for his first violation which occurred with 5:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.
