Jackson fined $25,000 for tampering

New York Knicks president Phil Jackson was fined $25,000 by the NBA for tampering with Oklahoma City Thunder guard Derek Fisher, ESPN.com reported Monday.

Jackson was reportedly fined for statements he made during a press conference last week about the possibility of hiring Fisher as the Knicks coach.

The NBA fined Jackson, in part, to reinforce its annual reminder to teams about its anti-tampering rules. Teams are not permitted to directly or indirectly express interest in other teams’ looming free agents.

ESPN.com also reported that Jackson’s first substantive talk with Fisher about the Knicks’ job is scheduled to take place this week.

Sources told ESPN.com that Jackson is planning to connect with Fisher by week’s end, giving Fisher some time after the Thunder were eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday night in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals.

Elway’s son charged with assault

Jack Elway, the 24-year-old son of Denver Broncos general manager and Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, was arrested on assault charges after his girlfriend told police he pulled her out of a car by her hair.

The Denver Post reported Monday that Elway ripped out pieces of the woman’s hair and pushed her to the ground, causing her to scrape her knees.

John Albert Elway III was booked into the Denver jail on charges of assault and disturbing the peace, then was released Saturday on $550 bail, according to jail records. A protection order was issued for the alleged victim.

The newspaper reported that the couple, who have been dating for a year, got into an argument around 1:40 a.m. Saturday while driving, the police report said.

He was bonded out by his father.

As a redshirt freshman quarterback in spring 2009 at Arizona State, Jack Elway elected to leave the Sun Devils’ football program.

Battier to retire after Finals, join ESPN

Win or lose, the 2014 NBA Finals will be the last for Miami Heat forward Shane Battier.

A veteran of 13 NBA seasons, the former Duke All-American is planning to join ESPN’s college basketball Gameday crew, bypassing a run for senate in his home state of Michigan.

“It would take an act of God to change it and that act of God hasn’t come,” Battier told Turner Sports.

Newsday first reported that the Democratic party in Michigan approached Battier about a political career.

A spokesman for that party, Josh Pugh, said they wished Battier the best of luck in a statement.
