BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 41-year-old Brunswick woman faces more than a dozen counts of failing to provide humane living conditions for her six dogs and a cat after police found her home “littered with feces, urine, garbage and clutter.”

Brunswick police visited the home Monday evening after neighbors reported not seeing 41-year-old Christa M. Young for days, Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan said.

Young was not home, but police entered the residence to check her welfare and allegedly discovered three pit bulls and three chihuahuas in kennels, and a cat.

“They were not in bad physical condition, but the living conditions is the issue,” Hagan said.

The cat, however, had an infection and required medical attention.

Hagan said police did not seize the animals because they were not in ill health.

Deputy Chief Jeff Emerson of the Brunswick Fire Department also inspected the house, and was scheduled to return Wednesday afternoon with a hazardous materials specialist from the department.

The situation remains under investigation, Hagan said.

Police issued Young criminal summonses for six counts of keeping unlicensed dogs, seven counts of failure to keep animals in humanely clean conditions and one count of failure to provide necessary medical attention to an animal.

Her court date was not immediately available.
