ROCKLAND, Maine — A section of Main Street was closed for nearly an hour and people were evacuated from nearby buildings following the discovery of a suspicious package Thursday.

But the suspicious package turned out to be a lunch container that a man had left by a trash can.

The package was found shortly before 12:30 p.m. in front of Key Bank, according to Deputy Police Chief Wally Tower.

Main Street between Park and Winter streets was closed and people in nearby buildings were ordered to leave, he said. Traffic was also blocked on side streets to Main including Elm Street.

A state bomb squad was called to the scene. Rockland fire and ambulance units also were stationed around the area.

A short time later a man returned to pick up the container. He was questioned and police determined that he had simply left it there.

Tower said a passerby called to report it as suspicious and public safety officials took appropriate precautions.
