CALAIS, Maine — Calais voters easily passed the proposed $7 million school budget that was on the ballot Tuesday.
Residents endorsed the 2014-15 school spending plan by a vote of 270 to 183.
The City Council voted 4-3 on May 29 to put the school budget on the ballot for the June 10 primary.
The budget contains $1.6 million in local funds — $1.4 million as required by the state (an increase of nearly $33,000) plus an additional $247,000.
Outgoing City Manager Diane Barnes warned earlier that if the school budget was approved by voters, the City Council would need to cut spending in the municipal budget by about $247,000 — which would result in layoffs — or raise taxes.
