BAR HARBOR, Maine — Rangers at Acadia National Park rescued an ailing man by boat and came to the assistance of another hiker suffering from dehydration Sunday.

A 70-year-old man from Amherst, Massachusetts, became lightheaded and fell while hiking a trail near Jordan Pond, and rangers were summoned to assist him about 12:56 p.m., reported supervisory ranger Brian Dominy.

The man had a pre-existing heart condition and was complaining of chest pain and difficulty breathing, Dominy reported Monday.

Rangers took him by boat across the pond to a boat launch area about 1:53 p.m., and members of his party took him to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor for treatment. Per national park policy, the names of injured visitors are not released.

In another incident, a 37-year-old woman from Danville, Pennsylvania, became dizzy and experienced a panic attack while hiking in the vicinity of Conner’s Nubble near Eagle Lake about 5:17 p.m. She had not had anything to eat or drink in about four hours, according to Dominy, and apparently was dehydrated.

Rangers helped the woman hike out to the Carriage Road and then drove her to her vehicle about 6:35 p.m.
