WASHINGTON, Maine — A 77-year-old Washington man was charged Thursday with sexually assaulting a child.

Richard J. Miller was summoned for Class A gross sexual assault and Class C unlawful sexual contact, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison. The investigation, conducted by Detective Justin Twitchell, began following a referral from the district attorney’s office.

The offenses occurred in June, the sheriff said, and involved a 12-year-old.

The investigator decided to issue summonses rather than arrest Miller, which the sheriff said was not unusual. The cases will go to the next grand jury, which is scheduled for September in Knox County.
