WATERVILLE, Maine — Police are investigating a stabbing that sent a 24-year-old man to the hospital Monday night.

Police arrived at a Carey Lane residence around 9 p.m. when they learned a man had been stabbed, according to Waterville Police Chief Joseph Massey. The man’s name was not disclosed.

The man suffered a stab wound to his abdomen and was transported to Inland Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police believe the stabbing was not a random act, despite the fact that the victim is refusing to speak to investigators.

“It appears that the victim and several other males went to a residence on Carey Lane to confront another male over a personal dispute between the victim and the suspect,” Massey said.

A fight subsequently broke out, resulting in the victim being struck on the head and stabbed, Massey said.

Further complicating investigators’ work, besides lack of cooperation from witnesses and the victim, was a thunderstorm that washed away blood trails and other evidence, Massey said.

Other evidence, including the suspected weapon, were recovered.

Massey said the public is not in any danger and police are still searching for the suspect. Anyone with information on the case should contact Waterville Police at 680-4700.
