CHINA, Maine — Police believe speed and distracted driving may have been factors in a single-vehicle accident that sent a teenage girl to the hospital Wednesday.

Deputies were called to Alder Park Road around 3 p.m. after the 17-year-old driver lost control and rolled her vehicle onto the roof, according to Deputy Derek Wing of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Wing said the driver, whose name was not disclosed, drifted over the shoulder of the road on a straightaway and overcorrected, causing her to lose control.

Despite being trapped in the vehicle, the driver was conscious and alert when Wing arrived at the scene, and was complaining of pain in her forearm and knee, the deputy said.

The girl was the only occupant in the vehicle.

China Rescue freed the driver from the vehicle and she was brought to MaineGeneral Hospital in Augusta for treatment.

No charges have been filed in connection with the accident, Wing said.
