MERRILL, Maine — An Aroostook County woman has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a single vehicle, according to Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall.
Crandall said a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant was found resting on its roof in a Littleton ditch on Foster Road just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A passer-by noticed the car and called 911. When sheriff’s deputies arrived no one was with the heavily damaged vehicle, Crandall said.
After investigating the incident for about an hour, the deputies found Paula Gardiner, 28, of Merrill, who admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to Crandall. A passenger, 18-year-old Cassidy Lefay of Crystal, was reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Both women suffered minor scratches. They told investigators they were wearing seat belts when the accident happened.
Crandall said the accident occurred on a stretch of Foster Road just before the surface turns from asphalt to gravel. Speed is believed to have been a factor and the investigation continues, the chief deputy said.
