WILTON, Maine — A Farmington man drowned in Wilson Lake on Tuesday after going for a swim, according to officials.

Jeffrey Mitchell, 63, had been boating with a friend and planned on going swimming, according to Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.

Mitchell dived into the water but was struggling upon surfacing, according to MacDonald.

Mitchell’s friend attempted to aid him into the boat without success. She was aided by two nearby kayakers and another boater. The group pulled Mitchell from the water and took him by watercraft to a nearby boat landing, where medical personnel met them.

Mitchell, who was not wearing a personal flotation device, was pronounced dead at the scene, MacDonald said. Flotation devices were found in Mitchell’s boat.

The incident remains under investigation.
