BYRON, Maine — A Portland woman suffered a broken leg in a fall on Tumbledown Mountain in Franklin County Tuesday, according to officials.
Maris Toland, 28, was rock climbing when she fell, according to Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service.
Game wardens responded to the area shortly after 8 p.m., MacDonald said.
In what MacDonald called an exhaustive effort, game wardens, Mahoosuc Search and Rescue and fire departments from six towns managed to carry Tolan down the mountain throughout the night Tuesday through very difficult terrain. Thirty-one volunteers and Mt. Blue State Park volunteers also assisted.
A LifeFlight helicopter brought Toland to Maine Medical Center in Portland early Wednesday morning, MacDonald said. Fire departments from Mexico, Roxbury, Weld, Rumford, Peru and Dixfield responded.
