BREWER — Brewer residents are invited to dispose of their household hazardous waste and universal waste in a safe and environmentally friendly way at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, which will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Brewer Public Works Department, 221 Green Point Road.
To participate in the collection, Brewer residents must have a Residential Household Hazardous Waste Product Permit, which may be obtained at the Brewer Public Works Department during normal business hours Sept. 8-Oct. 2. There is no cost to Brewer residents for the permit or disposal of the waste. Due to budget constraints, the number of permits issued will be capped at 100 residents.
If a resident does not register in advance for a permit, a fee of $6 per gallon will be charged the day of the collection, cash or check only.
Residents may bring a maximum of 10 gallons of hazardous household waste to the collection. Acceptable items include oil-based paint, paint remover, paint thinner, turpentine, varnish, chemical fertilizer, pesticides, linseed oil, used antifreeze, used motor oil, old gasoline, brake fluid and transmission fluid.
Brewer residents will receive a frequently asked question flyer in The Weekly on Sept. 4, and can find a link to the flyer at brewermaine.gov.
Universal waste, which contains hazardous materials such as mercury, lead and other heavy metals, also will be accepted during the Collection Day event. The list of acceptable universal waste is televisions, computer monitors, rechargeable batteries, mercury switches and devices, fluorescent lamps, PCB ballasts, computer components and stereo system components.
