HOULTON, Maine — Agents with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency were dispatched Friday to a local residence suspected of housing a methamphetamine manufacturing operation, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Members of the Houlton Police Department responded to an unrelated incident at the single-family home Thursday night, when they discovered the meth operation, McCausland said.

The house, which has not been identified, has been secured, McCausland said Friday, adding the MDEA’s lab response team would be there throughout the afternoon to search and seize any materials and components that may have been used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine.

Members of Houlton’s fire and police departments also were expected to remain on scene until the cleanup was completed because of the volatile nature of the components used in making meth, he said. All investigators entering the residence would be wearing protective suits and breathing apparatus, McCausland assured.

As of early Friday afternoon, no charges had been filed.

So far this year, the MDEA has responded to 19 meth labs, one less than the all-time record of 20 in 2013, McCausland reported.
