BANGOR — The Bangor Area Children’s Choir invites singers age 9 to 18 to attend a “Try-It” rehearsal 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at First Baptist Church, 56 Center St. Last year’s choirs sang two concerts with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, presented concerts in Rangeley, Farmington and Augusta, and sang for Homes for the Holidays and the Festival of Lights Parade, in addition to its own winter and spring concerts.

AREA — The Maine State Pomological Society announced that the 11th annual Maine Apple Sunday will be Sept. 14, with more than 20 participating orchards around the state. Maine Apple Sunday starts the peak of the apple harvest when summer apples are still available but the main crop is ready for its first pick. BANGOR — The annual Penobscot River Unified Atlantic Salmon banquet will be held at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Conference Center, Hogan Road, in Bangor. ‘The Question of God’
BANGOR — The Union Street Brick Church will present a play based on the book, “The Question of God,” by Armand M. Nicholi Jr. at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20, and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at the church, corner of Main and Union streets.
The subject of the play is described as a psychologically centered study of an hypothetical meeting between the atheist Sigmund Freud and the believing Christian, C.S. Lewis.
An open discussion will follow the play and refreshments will be available.

Race for Myeloma
BANGOR — The Race for Myeloma, a 5K walk or run, will take place Saturday, Sept. 20, at the James Doughty School, 143 Fifth St. Race day registration begins at 8:30 a.m.; the race will start at 9:45 a.m. for walkers, 10 a.m. runners.
Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause truck will be at the finish line. The ice cream is free in return for a donation to the Race for Myeloma.
Raffle drawings also will be held.

Maine authors
CARMEL — The Simpson Memorial Library will sponsor a night of entertainment featuring retired Maine game warden John Ford Sr. and retired Maine State trooper Mark E. Nickerson. They will present “Blue Lights and Funny Cider,” a collection of hilarious tales of Maine law enforcement in years past at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Golden Harvest Grange, Route 2 in Carmel. Admission is free.
Both performers are published authors. Their books, “Suddenly the Cider Didn’t Taste So Good” and “This Cider Still Tastes Funny” by John Ford and “Blue Lights in the Night” by Mark Nickerson will be available for purchase and signing before and after the performance.

Children’s programs
CARMEL — These programs will be held at Simpson Memorial Library, 8 Plymouth Road:
• Story hour for pre-kindergartners and older children, 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. This fall the library will present Mutt-i-grees in the library, a program that uses animal puppets, books, crafts and special events to teach children about shelter pets. The program encourages children to develop empathy along with related social and emotional skills. The program will run through the winter with many different events.
• Lap story time infants and toddlers up to age 3, 11:30 a.m.-noon. Tuesday, Sept. 16.
Adults are required to stay with their children. The child sits in the parent’s lap while they learn
songs, stories and more for the first 15 minutes. The last 15 minutes will be social time.
Bring a doll or stuffed toy for toddlers to hold in their laps.

Heritage Day
HAMPDEN — Heritage Day at the Hampden Historical Society will be held 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Kinsley House, 83 Main Road South.
The society provides the event for the community to remember how things were done in Hampden’s past. Exhibitors and presenters lined up for the event are spinning, rug braiding, candle dipping, blacksmithing, outdoor cooking, butter churning, cider pressing and cedar shakes to name a few.
A lunch of a hot dog, chips, a drink and a homemade cookie will be available for purchase.

Natural Dyeing Workshop
OLD TOWN — Kim Robichaud, a recent Maine Master Naturalist graduate, will conduct a Natural Dyeing Workshop on how to extract colors from local plant materials 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at Hirundo Wildlife Refuge. The program will include a nature walk, lunch (bring your own) and wild harvesting of a small amount of dye materials.
Robichaud will show how to use plant pounding, steam extraction, hot water immersion bath.
Attendees are encouraged to bring dyeable fabrics — natural fibers only, as synthetics don’t bind with the dye techniques. Fabric yardage will be available at the workshop at the cost of $5 per yard.
Robichaud also encourages attendees to bring fresh or frozen flowers, such as goldenrod, black-eyed susans, tansy, etc., for experimentation.

Writing Circle
ORONO — The Orono Public Library will offer the Writing Circle with Barbara Wicks for returning and new participants. The group will meet at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesdays at the library for seven weeks. This is an informal writing workshop where participants share drafts of their works in progress; conversations about development; revision and editing; and celebrations of effective word choices, polished phrases and unique perspectives. ORONO — CHISPA Centro Hispano announced that the seventh annual Hispanic Lecture Series for Latino Heritage Month will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. during September and October at the St. John Hill Auditorium, 165 Barrows Hall, on the University of Maine campus. All lectures are in English and are free and open to the public.

• “Ventajas del bilingüismo: Advantages of Bilingualism,” presented by Dr. Minerva Villafane, a clinical psychiatrist, Thursday, Sept. 25.
• “Alicia, esto es el capitalismo: when fiction depicts economy” with Dr. Carlos Villacorta Gonzáles, assistant professor, University of Maine, Thursday, Oct. 2.
• “Immigration issues impacting the Latino community” with Dr. Claudia Paz Aburto Guzmán, Spanish Department chairwoman, Bates College, Oct. 9.
Co-sponsor of the Hispanic Lecture Series with CHISPA is the University of Maine College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Modern Languages and Classics, the University of Maine Humanities Initiative and the History Department.
CHISPA is based in Bangor, Maine and is one of two Latino organizations in state.
