AUGUSTA, Maine — The Augusta police chief remains in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle over the weekend.
Chief Robert Gregoire, who made headlines last spring when he took on a fight against panhandling, is hospitalized with neck injuries.
Police say Gregoire was riding a motorcycle Saturday in Jay for a charity ride when he lost control on wet pavement.
The crash threw Gregoire and his wife, Cathy Gregoire, who was a passenger, off the bike.
Augusta police Sgt. Christopher Shaw, who was behind them, laid down his bike to avoid the crash.
Hospital officials say Gregoire’s wife and Shaw have been released and say Gregoire remains in critical condition as of Monday night.
