Two people were killed in a wrong-way collision on Interstate 95 in Medway on Monday night.
Luis Mendoza, 20, of Indian Township was allegedly driving a stolen 2011 Toyota Camry south on the northbound side of I-95 about 9:21 p.m. in Island Falls, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
East Millinocket police spotted Mendoza about 9:38 p.m. still driving the wrong way on I-95, going at speeds over 100 mph, Moss said Tuesday morning.
Police gave chase, but Mendoza continued speeding down the highway into a construction zone, near mile marker 244, where southbound traffic was being diverted onto the northbound side of the highway on a bridge.
On the bridge, north- and southbound traffic were separated by concrete barriers.
Mendoza continued south on the northbound side of the bridge, where he collided with another vehicle driven by 67-year-old Sandra Lacombe of Medway, killing both of them, Moss said.
The crash remains under investigation.
