A Harpswell woman allegedly almost ran over a deputy Monday when she fled from a traffic stop.
Karen Pennell, 48, has been charged with driving to endanger, failure to stop for law enforcement and violating conditions of release, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies stopped Pennell, who was wanted on a warrant out of Cumberland County, near Harpswell and Gurnet roads in Harpswell about 12:21 p.m.
Pennell stopped and spoke with the deputies, but when she was ordered out of the vehicle, she allegedly fled, nearly running over a deputy, according to the sheriff’s office.
Police found her about an hour later on Merritt Road, where she had stopped along the roadside. When deputies tried to box her in, Pennell allegedly fled again but blew through a stop sign at Harpswell Island and Merritt roads, crashing into a pickup truck driven by 56-year-old Robert Phillips of Harpswell.
Pennell wasn’t injured, and Phillips suffered minor injuries.
Pennell was taken to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland.
