CHEBEAGUE ISLAND, Maine — The driver of a 1998 pickup truck was killed in a single vehicle crash on Chebeague Island on Monday afternoon, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to a news release by Chief Deputy Naldo Gagnon, the individual’s 16-year-old Ford Ranger left the roadway and struck a utility pole just before 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The sheriff’s office is not releasing the driver’s name until it has notified the individual’s family members.

Sheriff’s deputies and Chebeague Island emergency medical responders responded to the South Road crash, Gagnon said.

“The driver of the truck was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash and was the only occupant,” Gagnon stated in the news release. “The driver was not wearing a seat belt. The crash is under investigation but early indications are that speed will be a factor in the crash.”
