The Toronto Maple Leafs signed former University of Maine star Spencer Abbott to a one-year contract on Tuesday, according to David Nonis, senior vice president and general manager of the Leafs.

Financial terms of the deal were not released by the team.

The 26-year-old Abbott, a left winger, spent the majority of last season with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League, posting 17 goals and 52 assists. He added 11 points in 11 playoff games.

Abbott played in one game for the Maple Leafs last season in his NHL debut.

Abbott will be trying to earn a spot on the Leafs roster and would go back to the minors if he doesn’t.

Abbott was named the Hockey East Player of the Year in 2011-12 and was the leading scorer in NCAA Division I that season with 21 goals and 41 assists for 62 points. His assist total also led the nation.

He spent four seasons at UMaine, collecting 54 goals and 92 assists in 151 games.

Nonis is also a former UMaine hockey player. He was a defenseman and two-year captain who graduated in 1988.
