BIDDEFORD, Maine — State police believe the case of two people found dead at a Biddeford motel Tuesday night was not homicide.
Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Wednesday morning that state police, who were initially called in to aid Biddeford police after the bodies were discovered around 8 p.m. Tuesday, are deferring all additional questions to local authorities.
State police are often asked to partner or take the lead in homicide investigations around Maine.
“From our standpoint, there’s no indication of a homicide,” McCausland told the Bangor Daily News on Wednesday morning. “All further information about the case will have to come from the Biddeford police.”
A message left for Biddeford Deputy Chief JoAnne Fisk was not immediately returned.
The bodies were found at the Sleepy Hollow Motel at 297 Elm St., police have said.
Portland television station WGME, CBS 13, reported on Tuesday night that the bodies were of one man and one woman, although police have yet to release their identities.
The deaths come less than two months after a double shooting less than a five-minute drive away from the motel, at a Western Avenue apartment building.
In that case, two Maine men were shot dead just outside the building in what state police called a “drug-related” incident.
